Weed surveys conducted by Natural Solutions Environmental Consultants at Lucinda Lake revealed that over time the abundance and distribution of native species gradually declined while the abundance and distribution of weed species increased. Over 20 individual project days, CVA will perform a targeted and focused eradication of weeds on the eastern (1.2ha) and western (1.4ha) sides of the lake, totalling 2.6ha. Newly weeded areas will be replaced with native grasses to prevent weeds from re-establishing and to provide appropriate habitat for wildlife. Areas no bigger than 0.3ha will be weeded at one time and will be planted immediately afterwards (the following day) to prevent clearing all vegetation which would expose wildlife and leave them vulnerable to predation. A total of 1000 native grasses will be planted. Each weeding day, CVA will deploy cane toadpole traps in the morning and set up camera traps in the afternoon. The traps and camera will remain overnight and be collected and counted the following planting day. All collected toad data will be provided to UQ for further research and all collected wildlife data will be provided to land managers (B4C).
