Wild Futures provides practical, on-the-ground actions that work. Working with experts from the Department of Conservation we identified key target species, including the korora/little blue penguin, that need our help.
Little penguins were common in New Zealand, but most are now on offshore islands where there is less disturbance.Their population and range of has been declining in areas not protected from predators such as rats, stoats and dogs. These threats have increased with more coastal development bringing more dogs and the clearance of traditional nesting sites.
Help restore little blue penguin breeding grounds of Wellington's stunning south coast. Activities include planting coastal trees, shrubs and sand-binding species on the dunes which will offer protection to penguin breeding grounds. Other tasks include removing invasive weeds, trapping and clearing litter from the beach.
We provide: an experienced team leader, tools, gloves, health and safety management, morning tea and refreshments.
What to wear/bring: sturdy boots, long sleeves and pants, a hat/beanie, waterproof jacket and a re-useable water bottle.
This event is sponsored by Energy Technical Services.
