Comerong Island is a National Park located approximately 1.5 hours south of Wollongong, on the Southern shore on the Shoalhaven River's exit point to the ocean. Comerong Island Nature Reserve plays a vital role in providing habitat for nationally and internationally significant fauna species.  Our work here will assist NSW National Parks with protection of the dune environment that plays home to a number of migratory and resident birds who use this area’s vast resources.

This project is focussed on outcomes to assist the Eastern Curlew, a migratory shorebird that calls our coastal estuaries, mudflats and sandspits home over spring and summer before returning to North Eastern China and Russia to breed in Autumn each year.  The Shoalhaven River plays host to a flock each year which has been recorded at over 100 indivduals, making it a very important waterway to their recovery.

Volunteers will be helping with some weed removal activities, fauna surveys, debris removal and planting to improve the health of this wetland system.
