Torrens Island is the site of our historic Quarantine Station, built in 1879 to stop passengers bringing diseases into Adelaide when traveling here to settle in Australia. Today, the site is remarkably intact and evokes the experiences of passengers placed in quarantine from the 1880s to the 1960s. The rest of the Island is also unique in that the area is reminiscent of what the whole Le Fevre Peninsula would have looked like before European settlement.
Conservation Volunteers have worked on the Island over many years preserving coastal habitat in an area relatively untouched by people. On this series of projects we will be concentrating on restoring areas of the Quarantine Station including removal of non-native plants, marine debris collection and surveys, and cleaning of the historic buildings.
This site is not often accessible to the general public so it’s a great chance to experience some of SA’s early history and help preserve it for the future.
