The Spit Nature Conservation Reserve in Avalon is a 300 ha nature reserve on the north-western shore of Port Phillip, managed by Parks Victoria, set aside to conserve and protect species, communities, and habitats of indigenous plants and animals.
The Spit contains sand spits, a lagoon at high tide, a mudflat at low tide and an area of saltmarsh, all of which vary in shape and size depending on the tide and, over longer periods of time, the onshore currents. This environment provides an area which is an extremely important feeding ground for a variety of birds, especially waders and waterbirds. The saltmarsh is important as one of the main wintering sites for the critically endangered Orange-bellied Parrot.
The Spit is listed as a wetland of international importance under the Ramsar Convention as part of the Port Phillip Bay (Western Shoreline) and Bellarine Peninsula Ramsar Site.
The Spit is accessible only by permit from Melbourne Water as it is adjacent to the Werribee Sewage Farm. This is a unique opportunity for you to be involved in protecting this important reserve alongside Rangers from Parks Victoria.
We will provide transport from South Geelong each day, departing at 8.15am and returning around 4pm. Or if you live local you can meet on-site by prior arrangement.
