Ramblers Run in Portarlington is a quaint walking track that runs between the foreshore and a mix of older cottages alongside large modern homeshouses near Point Richards Boat Ramp.
The area is prone to constant change by currents and tides, with unique lagoons that open and close to the bay throughout the year. The lagoon area provides protection for local and migratory birds, including waders from Alaska and Red Cap Plovers from Mongolia. Many birds seen in this area include Spoonbills, Ibis, Black-fronted Dotterel, White-fronted Chat, Caspian and Crested Tern, Banded Stilt, Kestrel and the very popular Pelican
Various indigenous plants sustain bird habitat and stabilise the coastal area - soil binding grasses, Seaberry Saltbush and succulents such as Noon Flower and Beaded Glasswort are excellent food sources. The native vegetation has been invaded in some sections by introduced plants from the neighbouring gardens.
Help us to improve the foreshore through weed identification and removal activities, rubbish collection, and planting native shrubs and grasses.
We will provide transport from South Geelong each day, departing at 8.15am and returning around 4pm. Or if you live local you can meet on-site by prior arrangement.
