The Miramar Peninsula was once an island teaming with life. Dense groves of shurbs and trees such as miro, totara, rimu and flowering rata were alive with the sound and movement of native birds; kereru, tui, kakariki, and now-extinct huia and the giant moa. During the time of early Polynesian settlement it acquired the name Te Motu Kairangi, meaning “Precious Island”.
Now, the Te Motu Kairangi restoration group is working to restore ecological health to Miramar Peninsula. Activities include weeding coastal restoration sites in preparation for the planting season.
What to wear/bring: Sturdy boots are essential, long sleeves, and long trousers. Ensure you pack warm clothes such as a rain jacket to protect you against wind. Bring a full water bottle and snacks!
What we provide: a fully trained team leader, gloves, tools and training. Free transport to and from the city centre is available (contact us to arrange a pick-up).
