The Hukarito Stream Project is an initiative led by the students and teachers of Ngati Toa School. They noticed the stream was overgrown with weeds so asked the blessing of the local iwi, Ngati Toa, to restore the stream. Under the guidance of Te Rito Gardens, Enviroschools and Ngati Toa, invasive weeds are being removed and riparian plants such as carex, ti kouka and harakeke are being planted. These native plants will provide the stream with shade and are an essential food source and breeding habitat for freshwater fish such as inanga and tuna (eel).

Join us for a day as we help the students of Ngati Toa School restore their local awa. Tasks include weeding, digging holes and helping the students with planting.

What we provide: all tools and gloves provided as well as training and an experienced team leader. Free transport to and from the project from Wellington and Porirua available.

What to bring/wear: sturdy boots, long sleeves and pants, waterproof jacket essential. Layering and wearing a hat or beanie is a good way to stay warm. Bring a water bottle and some food.

Ma whero ma pango ka oti ai te mahi - if everyone does their part, the work will be complete.
