Once upon a time, the region of Cairns was nothing but dunes, a mix of coastal forest and rainforest, and swampy wetlands.
The last of these original swampy wetlands is known as the Cairns Central Swamp, located smack bang in the middle of the city. It is home to a wide range of flora, such as the pandanus, lomandra grasses and paperbark trees.
Unfortunately, even though it is a secure, original bit of ecosystem, it is still not resistant to weeds, and one of the region’s worst – Mother in Laws Tongue – has made itself home in this reserve! It is also unfortunately a popular dumping ground for rubbish and waste, which we will also focus on removing.
Tuesday 28th August - Weed Removal
Thursday, 30th August - Rubbish Clean-Up
For this activity, you will be helping to remove this pest from various areas around the site. There is a walk around the swamp you can follow, taking you through all five different swamp communities present, allowing you to see how a lowland freshwater environment thrives in the tropics, removing weeds and rubbish/debris as you go along.
