Southport Heath (Epacris stuartii) is one of Tasmania's most threatened plants; with less than 1000 left in the wild, it has been added to the Australian Governments Threatened Species Action plan - 20 Plants by 2020. The plan aims to improve the trajectory of 20 plant species by 2020 and this project is delivering on the action plan for Southport Heath.

Southport Heath is restricted to just 2 locations in the world – 1. on Southport Island and 2. on Southport Headland. One of the main threats to the plant comes from phytophthora, which is a fungus attacks plants and also gets into dirt and mud and is easily spread by humans and animals on their shoes and feet.  A fence was installed across the headland to stop people accessing the plant and spreading the fungus many years ago, but it needs repairs in some key areas, which is where we come in!

We'll be removing enironmental weeds and other threats to the environment, as well as undertaking population surveys, so if you have good fitness, a good understanding of plant identification and science, and able to be outside in isolated locations, in all weather then this project is for you. Expect to get wet.
