As part of our Wild Futures program, we are running a project on the East Coast of Tasmania, focused on protecting and enhancing habitat for the Swift Parrot. The Swift Parrot has been listed as ‘endangered’ under the Commonwealth’s EPBC Act and is listed as a threatened species in Tasmania. There is known forging and breeding habitat in Orford, protecting and increasing this habitat will directly benefit this vulnerable species.

Volunteers will spend time across a number of sites including; Raspins Beach Conservation Area, Millingtons Beach Conservation Area, the ’10 Minute Walking track’, West Shelly and East Shelly beaches. These sites have remnant Blue Gum and Black Gum forests, which have been distinguished as a vital component of the Swift Parrot’s breeding habitat.

Volunteers will undertake various activities to protect the current habitat such as; weed removal and tree planting. Volunteers will also undertake surveys on sightings of both the Swift Parrot and any hollows for future management of these sites.

We will be working with the Orford Community Group and also Orford Primary School on these sites.
