The Borough of Queenscliffe in conjuction with Conservation Volunteers Australia manages and maintains numerous reserves located along the bayside beaches and the surf beach at Point Lonsdale, including the Queenscliff and Point Lonsdale Lighthouse Reserves. Weed management play a critical role in protecting and enhancing these forehsore areas.
The sand dunes around Queenscliff and Point Lonsdale consists of a variety of native plants, which help stabilise the sand dunes and keep them in place. However, weed invasion and misuse by people are rapidly contributing to erosion of the sand dunes.
Since January 2013 Council has been working in partnership with Conservation Volunteers Australia to remove woody weeds from the foreshore area. So far CVA teams have removed over 20 tonnes of weedy vegetation from this area.
You too could help contribute to this fantastic effort.
From the sensitive shores of Swan Bay to the pleasant bayside beaches of Queenscliff and Point Lonsdale and the rugged face of Bass Strait at Point Lonsdale's surf beach, the features, flora and fauna of the region are a treat for the locals and visitors alike. This really is volunteering with a view as you will be overlooking The Rip, watching ships go past and breathing in the fresh sea air as you learn new weed I.D. skills and improve the environment.
