Get some fresh air, meet new people, and make a real difference for our environment by helping to restore native wetland areas within our beautiful harbour, Te Awarua o Porirua. We'll be cleaning up rubbish and removing invasive weeds from around estuary areas and streambanks.
Porirua harbour is the largest estuarine wetland area in the lower North Island, and is home to many native birds including the spoonbill, paradise shellduck, white-faced heron, and many others. Bowlers Wharf in Papakowhai is a small but rare ecosystem in good condition, which feeds into the harbour. Local school groups have been helping to plant native plants aroung the banks to provide food and habitat for native fish, birds and lizards. Help us look after these plants to ensure they thrive!
