Located off Derwent Street in Island Bay, the Paekawakawa Reserve is an example of a success story for the local community.  This small piece of land was purchased by the Island Bay Natural Heritage Charitable Trust in 2006 when it was up for grabs for development. Once the Trust attained the land, they placed a QEII Covenant on the reserve and commenced to develop the area into a safe haven for native trees and birds, as well as for the local community. We aim to preserve and enhance the biodiversity to create a community Reserve that connects with the local network of green spaces, including the City to Sea Walkway, Tapu Te Ranga Marae and Oku Street Reserve. Through the development of a number of tracks, weed clearance, and planting projects the area has come a long way from where it was when it was first purchased.

At our upcoming working bee we will be creating a new track through one of the planting sites and doing a bit of maintenance work by removing competing weeds from around last years plantings.

What to wear/bring: sturdy boots essential, long sleeves and pants, a hat/beanie, waterproof jacket. Bring a water bottle and food.

We provide: gloves, tools, training and an experienced team leader. Free transport is available from the city centre or our office in Melrose (contact us to arrange a pick-up).

If spending a day surrounded by dense green bush and birdsong sounds appealing to you, then this is the community project for you!
