Ötukaikino is a 13-ha freshwater wetland reserve to the north of Christchurch, at the southern end of the northern motorway. The entrance is off Main North Road between Chaneys Corner and the Belfast end of the motorway. It is one of the few remaining original wetlands that were once common around Christchurch.

Since 1992, in a unique partnership between DOC and Lamb & Hayward Ltd, the reserve has undergone a restoration programme. The once willow-infested wetland is now almost clear of willow and other invasive weeds, and as the plantings become established, more native wildlife is being attracted back.

The working bee will be from 9:30am-12:30pm, and we’ll be doing tasks related to plant maintenance around the reserve.

Bring: Your own gardening gloves, sturdy boots or shoes, a water bottle and sunhat. As part of our health and safety requirements, CVNZ requires volunteers to wear long sleeves and trousers as protection from the sun and vegetation.

We’ll supply tools, but you are welcome to bring your own - hedge shears or flax knives are most useful.

We'd love to see you there, so please register below. Contact Donna (dlusby@cvnz.org.nz) 021 457 568 for more information.

COVID-19: We will be following the advice from government and local council on all Covid-19 restrictions. DOC requires volunteers to provide a vaccine passport to volunteer in this reserve, so please bring yours along.
