Orongomai
Port Hills, Canterbury

Location:
Port Hills, Canterbury
Departs from:
Orongomai Reserve, Summit Road
Departure time:
9am

Orongomai Reserve is on the Port Hills, a 30-minute drive from Halswell. The reserve offers stunning views of the Southern Alps, the southern bight and Lake Te Waihora (Ellesmere), as well as the city and north to the Kaikoura ranges. It is managed by the Christchurch City Council Rangers.

The reserve was grazed as farm land up to 15 years ago, but is now reverting naturally to forest, as native trees and plants establish through the scrub. There are some special plants in this reserve, including speargrass (Achiphylla subflabellata), ferns and native broom. There are also historic rock walls.

Our focus in this reserve is to help control gorse and broom which compete with native plants. We’ll be helping the native ecosystem recover from human disturbances (fire, logging, grazing), to allow bracken and scrub to colonise naturally over time.

Come for part or all of the day and join our international volunteers! Tools and gloves supplied. Bring drinking water, lunch and snacks, and wear sturdy footwear.

Note: we can provide transport, but spaces are limited, so get in touch to book your seat!
