This project focuses on the protection of two of Nillumbik's rarest orchids on a private property in Nillumbik Shire. The orchids are Caladenia amoena (Charming Spider-orchid) and Caladenia concolor (Crimson Spider-orchid), both of which are also listed under the federal Environment Protection and Biodiversity Conservation Act.
The owner and previous projects have been very successful in almost eliminating seed bearing mature Boneseed plants. However a recent germination of seed has resulted in locally dense regeneration. If left, this will become a major seed source and threat to these very rare orchids.
A major hand-pulling weeding operation is required for Boneseed (Chrysanthemoides monilifera) plants of up to 1m height. A large crew is required to undertake this important work. This project aims to address the threat of weed competition, specifically by controlling the aggressive woody weed – Boneseed.
