TOUR LOCATION
Chilli Beach. Located at 790km north of Cairns, on the eastern side of Cape York, north of Lockhart River within the beautiful Kutini-Payumu (Iron Range) National Park.
CONSERVATION IMPACT
Help rangers and Aboriginal community to remove and catalogue marine debris to protect marine wildlife. The data is sent to Tangaroa Blue, an Australian charity that focuses on removing and preventing marine debris, also helps to inform management strategies to aid pollution reduction.
TRAVEL
Starting from Cairns, then Mareeba Wetlands, Laura, Misgrave, Coen, Archer River, Kutini-Payamu (Iron Range) National Park, arriving at Chilli Beach on Day 3. Return from Chilli Beach on Day 7, all the way down Cape York back to Cairns on Day 10.
ITINERARY
Day 1: Cairns - Mareeba Wetlands - Split Rock - Musgrave
Cairns transfer to Laura via the Kuranda Range and wet tropical rainforest. At Laura, explore famous aboriginal rock art followed by a picnic lunch. Continue further up the Cape to camp at the historic Musgrave Roadhouse. LD
Day 2: Musgrave - Coen - Archer River
Pass through the mountainous views of the Bamboo Range and arrive at the historic town of Coen. Head up to the Archer River, taste the Cape’s best burger, and overnight camping at Archer River Road House. BLD
Day 3: Archer River - Kutini-Payamu National Park - Chilli Beach
Cross-country drive to destination through open forest, heathland and the rugged rainforest of Kutini-Payamu NP. Arrive and explore camp. In time to see flocks of metallic starlings arrive at sunset. Overnight camping at Chilli Beach. BLD
Day 4-6: Chilli Beach | Kutini-Payamu National Park
Work early morning and late afternoon alongside Tangaroa Blue & Community Rangers at the beach. Explore the surrounding natural landscapes. BLD
Day 7: Chilli Beach - Archer River
Last morning at the Beach, catalogue the source of marine debris before pack-up and head off down the Cape. Overnight camping at the Archer River. BLD
Day 8: Archer River - Hann River Roadhouse or Laura
Leave Archer River and drive back down to tonight's camping site. Depending on the road condition and drive time, might be at the Hann River Roadhouse or Laura. BLD
Day 9: Cooktown - Keating Lagoon - Lion's Den
Early departure for the historic township of Cooktown, with a stop at the boulder-strew Black Mountain. Visit one of Queensland's best exhibition of Captain James Cook - the James Cook Museum. Visit Keating Lagoon on the way to Lion's Den for tonight's camp location. BLD
Day 10: Lion's Den - Daintree - Cairns (or Port Douglas)
Final day starts from departing Lion's Den, enjoy the Daintree River cruise with hopeful encounters with wildlife. Back to Cairns with some of the most spectacular coastal scenery in Australia.
Optional Extra: Stay at Thala Beach Nature reserve (Port Douglas) instead of returning to Cairns.
