CONSERVATION IMAPCT:
The Murray Mallee is one of the last remaining strongholds for populations of South Australia’s faunal emblem, the Southern Hairy-nosed Wombat. Over the past 18 months, increasing numbers of Southern Hairy-nosed wombats in this region have been found in poor and emaciated condition with damage to their skin and other organs. The cause of this has not been determined but is likely to be nutritional stress. In the areas affected wombats have been found, very few native grasses remain. Instead, the habitat is often dominated by weeds. Volunteers will be involved in wombat warren vegetation surveys involving the collection of data (documenting location using GPS, recording measurements of warrens, vegetation, scats). This survey work supports research that plays a critical role in helping to plan for the long term survival of wombat populations in the Murray Mallee.
Brookfield Conservation Park also provides opportunities to spot Australian wildlife such as kangaroos, emu, eagles and many other birds.
