Louisa Creek Reserve is home to many species characteristic of Queensland’s precious beach scrub habitats, and acts as a buffer between houses and the creek. The reserve is just thirty minutes’ drive south of Mackay, a fast-growing tropical city on the blue Pioneer River which is surrounded by un-crowded beaches, fields of waving sugar cane and peaceful rainforest reserves & parks. It has suffered from invasion by weeds, dumping and recreational driving.

The local community and Landcare group are committed to bringing the natural landscape back to full health, and CVA has been helping them for more than six years.  Activities may include planting and looking after native trees, removing non-native vegetation, creating walking trails and putting up information signs.

Since the project began, significant areas have been transformed from thickets of invasive exotics to vigorous new native plantings. Teams are now moving into fresh zones to carry on the good work.

Conservation Volunteers accommodation is not available on this project, but all levels of tourist accommodation are available in Mackay, from backpacker hostels to high-quality hotels. A team leader collects local and visiting volunteers daily from pick-up points in the city.

Volunteers need to bring and wear long pants, a long-sleeved shirt, boots or sturdy shoes, a broad-brimmed hat and a great attitude :)
