The Fremantle Prison is WA's only world heritage-listed building and is the most intact of all Australian convict sites. Built by convicts in the 1850s, Fremantle Prison was used as place of incarceration for 136 years before being decommissioned as an operating maximum security goal in 1991. The empty prison with its solitary cells and gallows is a monument to a system of punishment that is uncomfortably recent.
Join this project for an exclusive opportunity to go behind-the-scenes and experience a taste of life behind bars as we assist the Heritage Conservation staff to document the contents of the cells.
PLEASE NOTE: These are single-day projects, but we require volunteers that are available for all three-days.
This project is unable to be booked online, please contact the Office on 9335 2777 or perth@cva.org.au if you would like to get involved.
