Limeburners Bay is a tide-dominated estuary that runs off Hovells Creek and is a regionally significant conservation reserve with saltmarsh and Ramsar classified wetlands. The area is incredibly popular for birdwatching, recreational fishing and hiking.

The shorelines and sandy spits are important feeding and roosting environments for a diverse range of birdlife, and provide potential habitat for the endangered Orange-bellied Parrot. The inlet also supports large beds of seagrass plants which provide important bird feeding ground and fish nursery habitat.

A wide range of coastal and wetland flora species survive on the shores of the tidal inlet and creek, with regionally significant stands of White Mangrove lining the shores of Hovells Creek.

Relatively intact stands of Shrubby Glasswort, Beaded Glasswort and Chaffy Saw-Sedge communities also contribute to its importance as a conservation area in the region, with these plants supporting other animals such as the uncommon Altona Skipper Butterfly.

The volunteer team will undertake a range of activities to protect Limeburners Bay, including tree planting, weed removal and rubbish colleciton. These activities will preserve and enhance the diverse environmental values that the Bay supports.

We will provide transport from South Geelong each day, departing at 8.15am and returning around 4pm. Or if you live local you can meet on-site by prior arrangement.
