Ballina Shire Council has received an Environmental Trust Grant to undertake bush regeneration and supplementary plantings at Prospect Lake, Chickiba and on the banks of North Creek. This event complements other works already underway at Chickiba Creek. Conservation Volunteers Australia is working with Ballina Shire Council to improve riparian vegetation and water quality at these sites and get the community involved.
Riparian vegetation is located on the banks of creeks and lakes. A healthy area of riparian vegetation will include native reeds, shrubs and grasses in and along the waterline and native trees on top of the embankment. Imporving the riparian vegetation provides bank stabilisation, shading that gives a thermal cover to shield creeks and fish, a habitat and food chain support for native species.
