The Halswell Quarry is a popular destination for locals for recreation and relaxation. Stone was first taken from the Quarry in the 1860s and it was a working quarry for 130 years up until 1990, when Christchurch City Council made the decision to turn it into a recreation reserve. Since then more than 250, 000 trees and shrubs have been planted, and a wetland has been developed in the lower quarry.

CVNZ assist with releasing and mulching plantings during the warmer months and then planting in the winter. The area we work on is a 5-minute walk from Paterson House. Plantings in the wetland area include cabbage trees (ti kouka), flax (harakeke) and carex.

The working bee will be from 9:30am-12:30pm. Meet in the main carpark off Kennedys Bush Rd.

Tasks include: releasing and mulching.

Bring: Your own gardening gloves, sturdy boots or shoes, a water bottle and sunhat. CVNZ encourages volunteers to wear long sleeves and trousers as protection from the sun and vegetation.

We'd love to see you there, so please register below. Contact Donna (dlusby@cvnz.org.nz) 021 457 568 for more information.
