Rocky Cape is in Tasmania's North West, near Wynyard and home to some special creatures.
As part of the Atacopsis Gouldi (giant freshwater lobster) habitat rehabilitation plan, we will be planting several hundred plants along a river at Rocky Cape in partnership with Cradle Coast NRM. Due to the long drive (2h15m), we will be departing Launceston at 7:30am and returning at 5pm but this is a project well worth the drive.
The Giant Freshwater Lobster - the largest freshwater crustacean in the World - is endemic to rivers in Northern Tasmania. They were once fairly common; however, we are now seeing localised extinctions or rapid declines in population densities in many of the state’s northern river systems.
Historically, the primary threat to the Giant Freshwater Lobster was fishing pressure, but the introduction of a fishing ban in 1998 has seen a reduction of this threat, although illegal poaching is still frequently reported. Currently, the most significant threat impacting upon the species is large scale land clearing and habitat disturbance in upstream reaches of catchments supporting lobster populations, as increased siltation of waterways and modifications to water flows can have a considerable impact on the life cycle of lobsters, particularly affecting the species’ juvenile life stage, as juveniles require large, stable rocks or logs with a cavity underneath and areas of high moss cover. Volunteering on this project will make a difference to a Tasmanian treasure.
