The Fitzroy River is crossed by the Tyrendarra lava flow, just upstream of the Princes Highway at Tyrendarra. The Tyrendarra lava flow is 30,000 years old and extends down an old flow path of Darlot Creek. The location of the river mouth is dynamic, moving across the sandbar at the mouth. One of the main threats that the area faces is the invasion of introduced flora and fauna. Teams from Conservation Volunteers Australia will be improving the native biodiversity of the area by focusing on weed control and revegetation.
Bring your binoculars and see if you can spot birds and other local wildlife in the estuary.
