This coming spring/summer PhD candidates from Melbourne University will be trapping reptiles
in south west Victoria and south east South Australia, to investigate the impacts of fire and
fragmentation on this assemblage. However, before we start trapping we have a large amount of
infrastructure which we need to install, including pitfall traps and drift fencing.
CVA are helping setting up 150 sites within the study area. At each site is a
200m transect marked out by three metal droppers and flagging tape. Six pitfall traps and six funnel
traps are being placed evenly along each transect to collect information about reptile diversity
Each pitfall trap consists of a 20L bucket dug into the ground and drift fence set up in a cross
formation. Funnel traps will be laid on the ground in pairs, either side of a single stretch of drift
fence.
