In 1870 the Richmond Birdwing Butterfly was reportedly found in great numbers in the streets of Brisbane. Today, less than one per cent of its rainforest habitat is left and permanent populations of the butterfly no longer exist in the Brisbane area. As remnant colonies become isolated, the resulting inbreeding leads to a variety of negative effects, which include reduced reproductive rate, the laying of sterile eggs, premature death, pupation failure and a loss of vigour, ultimately causing local extinctions. Richmond birdwing butterfly vines are now listed as Vulnerable.

Woodstock has been identified as a critical link in a strategic planting corridor by the Richmond Birdwing Conservation Network (RBCN). The corridor connects Tamborine Mountain National Park with Mt Cotton where there are known butterfly populations. Working with RBCN and Logan City Council, CVA will use these funds to plant 400 birdwing vines at Woodstock to connect Richmond birdwing butterfly populations and allow for genetic diversity and resilience in the population.
