Connecting Koala Habitat at Wilsons River

Conservation Volunteers Australia is partnering with landholders and community volunteers in the Lismore area to restore degraded pasture back to nationally threatened Lowland Rainforest Endangered Ecological Community through revegetation with locally native tubestock. This project is an important part of our Connecting Koala Habitat program which, with assistance and support from dedicated rural landholders and funding from The Australian Government’s 20 Million Trees Program (part of the National Landcare Programme) aims to improve and link koala habitat between local farms.

Koalas are listed as nationally vulnerable due primarily to the loss and fragmentation of habitat. Small habitat remnants in the project areas currently support a fragmented Koala population, leaving individuals at risk of predation, isolation and displacement. This project will help to create and restore a strategic habitat corridor throughout the landscape which will enhance habitat connectivity for the Koala population whilst improving the riparian corridor of the Wilson’s River.

The outcomes are also a significant contribution to the Lismore Koala Plan which identifies the target Koala population as one of the most significant on the NSW north coast.

Working together with community volunteers, we are aiming to complete the planting of 5000 trees by the end of August. The sites have been prepared and holes have been dug ensuring easy planting sessions, and extra helping hands are always welcome!
