Liffey is a tranquel and lush little community at the base of the western tiers. Our friends at Tasmanian Conservation Trust have a grant to carry out community cleanups, focusing on inappropriately disposed car tyres. There is no regional or state strategy for car tyres and the broader project is aiming to give greater attention to the wide spread but largely ignored problem while also cleaning up priority locations. It is hoped that this project will grow to a larger statewide project to cleanup tyres while detering illegal and inapproriate disposal of tyres.
In particular, we will be cleaning car tyres inside and out (the inside is takes most effort) with water and brushes. A large sponge is used to remove excess water from the inside. About 10% are very dirty with chunks of soil to be removed (by banging on the ground or scooping out by hand) before scrubbing. Cleaned tyres are then stacked.
So be part of a team helping to reduce farm waste and put old car tyres to a better use.
