Sand dunes are natural habitats for many native species and, in their natural state, they protect land and property from erosion, storms, cyclones and tsunamis. But many of our dunes are under threat, which creates instability, increased erosion and loss of native plant and animal life. The Kaiuau dunes, are a 20-minute walk from the Onehunga Bay carpark at the stunning Whitireia Park and are an important nesting ground for marine birds and lizards. Join us as we restore the dunes by releasing native coastal shrubs such as wiwi, bush daisy and sand coprosma from weeds.
What we provide: a fully trained team leader, gloves, tools and training. Free transport to and from the city centre is available.
What to wear/bring: Sturdy boots are essential (gumboots recommended), long sleeves, and long trousers. Ensure you pack warm clothes such as a jacket, beanie, jumper and a rain jacket to protect you against wind and rain. Bring a full re-usable water bottle and some lunch.
