The Point Cook Coastal Park and Cheetham Wetlands are located 20km southwest of Melbourne, and feature salt marshes, lagoons from Skeleton Creek, intertidal sand banks and a Marine Sanctuary.

Cheetham Wetlands are internationally significant because they provide important feeding and habitat areas for thousands of migratory birds from Japan, Siberia and New Zealand. They rank among the top places in the world for migratory wading birds.

Two rare migratory waders may be found here – the double banded plover from New Zealand and the eastern golden plover from Siberia and Alaska.

The Point Cook Marine Sanctuary lies just offshore from the park and covers nearly 300 hectares. It was declared a sanctuary in 2004 to protect the marine ecosystems of the basalt reef and is relatively unspoilt being one of the last intact reef environments in Port Phillip Bay.

Protecting the habitat values on the land feeds into the marine sanctuary as it reduces sediment runoff and pollution entering the bay. Join us to assist with tasks such as weed management and litter collection to protect and preserve this valuable area of Melbourne.

We will provide transport from West Melbourne each day, departing at 8.15am and returning around 4pm. Or if you live local you can meet on-site by prior arrangement.
