Centennial Park Day
Lying in the heart of Sydney, Centennial Parklands comprises Moore Park, Queens Park and Centennial Park and covers more than 360 ha. A classic urban park in the Victorian tradition it is one of the world’s finest & most used urban spaces, catering for 6 million visits a year.
Prior to its establishment in 1888, the area now known as Centennial Park was known as the Lachlan Swamp. Water from this natural freshwater drainage area was channeled via Busbys Bore to the settlement of Sydney.
Today the pond system within the park not only provides a picturesque setting for visitors and wildlife alike, but is critical for Sydney's stormwater management and drainage. These ponds form the upper catchment of the Botany Wetlands, which lie six kilometres downstream and are the largest freshwater wetland system in inner-metropolitan Sydney. These water bodies including the well known Kensington Ponds, provide important habitat for water birds and aquatic life and are a significant feature of the formal design of Centennial Park.
As well as providing an invaluable green space for a wide variety of human activities it is also home to an impressive range of wildlife, from breeding waterbirds to a sizeable colony of flying foxes. There is a variety of valuable natural & heritage conservation works to be undertaken within the park, e.g. bush re-generation works such as removing invasive weed species from the naturalised areas of the park.
