Volunteers will be providing a cleanse to some local urban creeks and drains in Cairns, before and after the wet season, where floods carry rubbish down these waterways, into the inlet and out to the Reef. Rubbish removal will occur along the upper edges of the creeks and drains, with our project partners removing in-water debris, followed by refreshments before joining nearby schools to help sort through the litter removed, discussing its source, ways to prevent it ending up in our creeks, and entering the data into the Australian Marine Debris Database.
Tuesday, Nov 6th - Chinaman Creek, behind Our Lady Help Good Christians School, Earlville
Thursday, Nov 8 - Fearnley St Drain/Smiths Creek, meeting on Mulgrave Rd next to drain, behind Parramatta Park State School
This project is being undertaken in conjunction with Great Barrier Reef Marine Park Authority, Cairns Far North Environment Centre, Cairns Regional Council and Dawul Wuru Aboriginal Corporation.
