Microbats are small bats with a wingspan of about 25cm that feed on insects such as mosquitos. Many microbats use echolocation to navigate in complete darkness with some species spending their days deep within caves, while others rest beneath bark on trees and in man-made structures such as houses and buildings.
Every night, microbats eat 40% - 50% of their own bodyweight, which is up to 1,000 of those pesky mosquitos each night! So they are definitely great to have in your backyard. However, the removal of trees in urban areas has resulted in microbats having fewer places to live and breed, and their numbers are therefore diminishing in built-up areas.
Microbat boxes are a way of increasing the number of microbats within suburbia, and obviously decrease the number of mosquitoes and other insect pests.
Join us for a day to build microbat boxes that will then be donated back to the community.
