Bothamley Park is a large Y shaped park, sandwiched between the suburbs of Cannons Creek and Aotea in Porirua. The central walking track (known as 'the old road') runs its entire length and in earlier maps of the City, this road was the access for farms in the area before the Housing NZ development occurred in the 1950's. Today this old road provides a gentle access amongst the trees, up the valley besides the Kenepuru Stream.
Some areas of the park remain in old stand native forest, while other parts are planted with exotic species, and others still are in the process of being planted with young natives. Being located in close proximity to Belmont Regional Park, Bothamley is an important ecological corridor and is the home to a number of threatened bird and plant species.
On this day we'll be lending our support to the Aotea Conservation Volunteers to help them realise their vision of a vibrant healthy native forest in the heart of their neighbourhood. Tasks vary but may include removing invasive weeds, planting natives and putting plant protectors on.
What to wear/bring: Sturdy boots are essential, long sleeves, and long trousers. Ensure you pack warm clothes such as a jacket, beanie, jumper and a rain jacket to protect you against wind and rain. Bring a full water bottle and snacks!
What we provide: a fully trained team leader, gloves, tools and training. Free transport to and from the city centre is available (contact us to arrange a pick-up).
If you'd like to join in this regular working bee and have fun alongside our teams of volunteers then get in touch today, it'd be great to have your help!
