Birds of the Top End - Fogg Dam Conservation Reserve

The Top End region around Darwin has a large number of lagoons and wetland where local and migratory bird life is present throughout the year. However, with ever expanding urbanisation and other environmental variables, it is hard to know what the long term effects will be on our beautiful bird species.

During this bird survey project, we will be surveying and monitoring bird populations at one of Darwin’s iconic conservation reserves – Fogg Dam, home to almost 200 local and migratory bird species as well as pythons, turtles and other fauna species. We will be practising bird ID skills at designated survey sites using binoculars and field guides.  Fogg Dam reserve, amongst other wetlands in the Top End – provide an important food source, resting sites and breeding grounds for birds.

These surveys help tp collect important baseline data on the changes in bird numbers (positive or negative) over the years that may contribute to planning and development cases in the Top End.

This project is a great relaxing project for all ages, we will have set monitoring sites a short walking distance from the vehicle, where we will base ourselves for the project and record the presence of particular bird species.
