Waharau Regional Park is the eastern gateway into the Hunua Ranges. The manuka cover of the lower slopes is home to a variety of diverse plant species, from club mosses, filmy ferns, ground orchids and liverworts, to coral lichens that give bushes a magical 'goblin-like' appearance. Birdlife varies from the shore birds, such as Oyster Catchers and Spotted Shags, at the stream mouth to the forest birds, including Tui and Wood Pigeon, of the higher slopes. Volunteers will be assisting with tree planting.
