What's happening in the lakes and ponds of Banora Point? They make up the waterway system known as the Banora Point Western Drainage Scheme and are an asset to local residents and wildlife alike. Locally famous for the aquatic plants within and lily pads on top, some of the ponds are also known nesting and foraging sites for the Comb-crested Jacana, a unique little bird with particularly large feet designed for walking on aquatic vegetation. This species is listed as vulnerable in New South Wales.
To protect the Jacana and other wetland fauna, we are working with Banora Point's residents to improve the appearance, water quality and overall condition of the lakes and ponds. Volunteers are needed to assist with a range of activities within the parklands surrounding the waterways, including coordinating and taking part in planting and weeding days, Citizen Science Workshops, Walks and Talks, and helping us out with the occasional sausage (and veggie burger) sizzle!
This project is guaranteed to be a lot of fun for all participants! Please contact the Ballina CVA office on 6681 6169 for more information.
