The Eastern Barred Bandicoot in Victoria has almost become lost to us and is now considered extinct in Victoria’s wild. Two main threats have impacted on the bandicoots survival:
· 99% of the state’s native grasslands have disappeared
· Predation by foxes and cats have decimated bandicoot numbers
The Hamilton parklands incorporate a signnificant native grassland which is enclosed in a predator proof fence. It holds the only population of Eastern Barred Bandicoots in Western Victoria and is one of the most important sites state wide for this species.
During this week you will get the oppertuntiy to survey these amazing little critters by helping us trap and monitor them.
Please be aware - this is taxing work which will include walking long distances, carrying heavy equipment and monitoring in all weathers.
