This week Conservation Volunteers will visit Whakanewha Regional Park and Te Matuku Peninsular on Waiheke Island where we will be carrying out a range of vital conservation activities.
Discover Waiheke!. The island has many native forest areas with mature stands of kohekohe/taraire forest and its large wetlands are home to some uncommon birds, such as bittern, banded rail, spotless crake and the New Zealand dotterel. Waiheke is steeped in Maori and European history. The land was cultivated by Maori for centuries, once supplying the growing needs of early Auckland.
Help make a difference to this extraordinary habitat. Our conservation tasks for the week will include control of the climbing environmental pest plants japanese honeysuckle, and moth plant, servicing baitlines, mulching, cutting and pasting tobacco weed and pulling out weeds and unwanted plants from shellbanks to protect dotterel breeding areas.
Thanks to Sealink for their generous support in transporting our volunteer team to the island!
