The Eastern Barred Bandicoot is considered extinct in the wild on Australia’s mainland, after losing 99% of their natural grassland habitat, the main threat to the bandicoot is now the predation from foxes and cats. Populations left on the mainland now exists within only three enclosures in Victoria that include; Mt Rothwell, Woodlands Historic Parklands and Hamilton Community Parklands.
Did you know the last wild population of the Eastern Barred Bandicoot was found in Hamilton? They were residing in old car bodies in the local tip. Since then a captive breeding program was started and the Eastern Barred Bandicoot Recovery team was formed to help bring their numbers back up to a sustainable level so one day they can again look forward to a wild future.
Hamilton’s Bandicoot Enclosure is bringing us one step closer to achieving this outcome. We need your help in making sure that their natural habitat in the enclosure is kept in good condition.
Tasks will include:
-Walk around the fence perimeter
-Filling in animal diggings on/close by to the fence line
-Maintaining the fence itself where needed
-Removal of any unwanted weeds along the fence line and throughout the enclosure
These tasks are a great way to enjoy the natural bushland our bandicoots call home at the Hamilton Community Parklands. Your valuable assistance will mean that one day the Eastern Barred Bandicoot will secure their Wild Future!
