The Tablelands Cassowary Facility is a new first-of-its-kind facility where rehabilitated cassowaries are released into the reserve. This type of facility reduces the threats and pressures that the cassowaries would face if they were released directly back in to the wild. The property is managed to remove or reduce the threats, such as domestic and wild dogs, feral pigs, barbed wire fences, weed infested habitat and traffic. Many cassowary food trees have been planted on the property to help give the cassowaries the best possible conditions for recovery and survival. You will be helping to plant some of the special food trees when you spend time with us on this project.

You will also get the chance to join us for some plant nursery activities including seed collecting and propagating vital Wet Tropics plants in a privately owned nursery nestled in the forests on the outer edges of Lake Barrine in the World Heritage Crater Lakes National Park in the Atherton Tablelands. The species you will be propagating will later be planted at the Tablelands Cassowary Facility.

The nursery is situated on a Nature Refuge which has seen many previous projects of ours involving tree plantings to help create corridors and habitat for threatened species of the area, including the Cassowary and the Lumholtz Tree Kangaroo. It is also home to platypus, various frogs and musky rat kangaroos.  If you’re lucky, you might spot some wildlife while you are volunteering!
