The Eastern Barred Bandicoot was historically common throughout the Basalt Plains grasslands (between Melbourne and Hamilton). Increased urbanisation and agricultural pressure, coupled with predation from cats, dogs and the introduced fox, has left this unique species extinct in the wild.
Did you know the last wild population of the Eastern Barred Bandicoot was found in Hamilton? They were residing in old car bodies in the local tip. Since then a captive breeding program was started and the Eastern Barred Bandicoot Recovery team was formed to help bring their numbers back up to a sustainable level.
Hamilton’s local Bandicoot enclosure is bringing us one step closer to achieving this outcome.
We now need further assistance to help keep the enclosure free from cats and foxes to protect the bandicoots that call it home. Doing regular weekly fence patrols to make sure the fence is maintained at a predator proof level is the best way we can help keep our bandicoots safe.
Tasks include:
-Walk around the fence perimeter
-Maintain and report any damage/vandalism to the fence
-Maintain animal diggings on/close by to the fence line
-Report on any possible breaches to the enclosure
-Removal of any unwanted weeds along the fence line
Your valuable assistance will mean that one day the Eastern Barred Bandicoot will be able to be released back into their natural habitat and help to secure them a Wild Future!
