The Eastern Barred Bandicoot is considered extinct in the wild on Australia’s mainland, after losing 99% of their natural grassland habitat, the main threat to the bandicoot is now the predation from foxes and cats. Populations left on the mainland now exists within only three enclosures in Victoria that include; Mt Rothwell, Woodlands Historic Parklands and Hamilton Community Parklands.
Did you know the last wild population of the Eastern Barred Bandicoot was found in Hamilton? They were residing in old car bodies in the local tip. Since then a captive breeding program was started and the Eastern Barred Bandicoot Recovery team was formed to help bring their numbers back up to a sustainable level so one day they can again look forward to a wild future.
Hamilton’s Bandicoot Enclosure is bringing us one step closer to achieving this outcome. We will be hosting a guided spotlighting tour after hours through the 100ha enclosure to see if we can spot one of our cute little nocturnal marsupials when they are most active foraging amongst their native grasslands for food.
You will have the opportunity for a rare sighting of this threatened species and to learn about how we at Conservation Volunteers Australia are helping our bandicoots in their fight against extinction. We will provide information on how you can get involved and help give these animals a brighter, wilder future.
We will be meeting in the HIRL carpark located at 333 North Boundary Road, Hamilton VIC at 8pm. Please dress warmly, beanies and gloves are a must!
