The Gawler River was once a diverse natural river system teeming with bird and animal life. Gawler River Riparian Restoration (GRRR) is a volunteer group who work to restore sections of the Gawler River behind The Food Forest in Hillier.  You will spend your day helping with Riverbank restoration, creating habitat for local native animals and birds.  You can learn about the river system and the importance of involving the community in preserving native habitats for future generations to appreciate and enjoy.

Activities could include planting local native trees and grasses to re-create original habitat for lizards, birds and small animals, and removing invasive weeds to enhance previous habitat plantings.  A new bicycle route is planned for along the Gawer River to pass by this area so in the future you may be able to enjoy a bike ride next to beautiful bush you helped to renew.

The site demonstrates how difficult terrain and particularly river corridors can be revegetated and how rich indigenous habitats can be re-established, particularly linking the value of the ecosystems with adjacent agriculture through the action of predatory insects and birds.

Come and join our team of volunteers.  It's a great opportunity to meet like-minded people and contribute to improving our environment.
