We invite you to join Conservation Volunteers on an important project run in partnership with the NSW Office of Environment and Heritage. The aim of this project is to collect data across the Southern Tablelands, which will NSW land managers understand the status of local koala populations, and inform management decisions and policy. This is a unique opportunity to get involved in a project that will have direct benefits for an entire species.
However, it can be a tough activity to undertake. You can expect to walk up to 2-3 km off track, often through dense vegetation and up some steep terrain in order to reach our project sites, where we will then undertake the survey. A full induction will be provided on site on how to undertake this activity.
Koalas were once common and widespread throughout eastern Australia. Yet despite their iconic status, a number of factors – including the fur trade, habitat loss and disease - have led to substantial declines in their numbers and a federal listing as vulnerable to extinction. They now only occur naturally in fragmented pockets of south-eastern Australia and Queensland, and only where there are adequate food and habitat trees to sustain them.
This is a fantastic opportunity to get involved in essential data collection, which will have real and profound impacts on conserving our local koala populations.
Essential requirements:
- Moderate to high level of fitness
- Experience in bushwalking
- Desire to participate in critcal conservation efforts
