Help the Endangered Eastern Barred Bandicoot

The Project:

The Eastern Barred Bandicoot is the most endangered mammal in Victoria with only 200 individual animals remaining. The Hamilton Community Parkland holds thee most secure population but requires constant effort to keep the parkland in good health.

During this project week we will be surveying the site using remote camera's for signs of bandicoot activity, walking the site surveying for Kangaroo populations, doing a spotlighting tour and removing tree's that threaten indigenous plant populations.

You are welcome to join any of these activities throughout the week.

The Town of Hamilton:

Hamilton is the largest town in the Southern Grampians and is the gateway to the Grampians National Park only 20 minutes away. Hamilton was built near the border of three traditional indigenous tribal territories: the Gunditjmara land that stretches south to the coast, the Tjapwurong land to the north east and the Bunganditj territory to the west.

Today Hamilton boasts many local attractions including the Hamilton Botanical Gardens, the world renowned Hamilton Art Gallery and the Eastern Barred Bandicoot sanctuary at the community parkland.

Where will I be staying?

For this project you are able to join us for a much or as little time as you wish! If you would like to stay with us over night we can provide you with basic backpacker accommodation in our volunteer house in Hamilton.

What will I see and do?

With so much to see and do within the region the options are endless! We will visit the Wannon and Nigretta waterfalls where the Wannon river crashes its way down through the table land onto the Victorian Volcanic Plain. We will hopefully get to see some of our iconic wildlife including the illusive Platypus, Long Necked Turtle, Black swamp Wallaby and maybe even the critically endangered Eastern Barred Bandicoot!
