The Valley Lake Conservation Park is a refuge for endangered flora and fauna. Nestled in Mt Gambier’s Crater Lakes the protected park works as a management pool for significant Australian species, including the Southern Brown Bandicoot and Potoroo. The park has diverse habitats suited for its animal species, including wetland systems, grasslands and tall Eucalypt stands. The park also harbours a display garden of some of the rarest plants in Australia.
This project will entail the vital establishment and maintenance of small mammal habitat. Conservation Volunteers and the City of Mt Gambier Council are encouraging the community to support the significant sites, and raise awareness about threatened species and garden weed escapes, by being involved in the care of the Crater Lakes and Conservation Park. Volunteers are encouraged to explore the undergrowth to search for signs of where the small mammals were foraging the night before. Conservation Volunteer team leaders will share their local bush knowledge and teach you how to identify the tracks and traces of the Southern Brown Bandicoot and Potoroo.
