Waharau Regional Park
Much of the area that now forms Waharau was cleared of forest at the turn of the 20th century to form farms. Poor soils and steep ground led to their abandonment in the 1930s and gradual reversion to forest. The park was opened in 1979 by the late Maori Queen.
Lower slopes are covered in manuka with high species diversity of the ‘lower’ plants such as mosses, lichens and liverworts. Higher ground holds regenerating mixed kauri and beech forest. Tapapakanga is a 121ha coastal farm park. It holds an excellent example of a Maori stonefield gardens and two pa sites. Large spreading pohutakawa are a feature along the coastline. Steeper ground has now been fenced to remove grazing and allow the understorey to regenerate.
This week we will be helping with track maintenance and predator control at the park to keep pest species out of areas of revegetating forest.
